Pindar,
Who is Pindar?
Pindar was a Greek Poet and Philosopher.
What do I know of Pindar? Not much actually. Here’s a Wikipedia link to read-up on Pindar (about as much as I know of him).
My father had a plaque (I am now its keeper), which read something-like as follows:
Forge Thy Tongue,
On An Anvil Of Truth;
And What Flies Up,
Though It Be But A Spark;
Shall Have Weight.
Pindar – Greek Philosopher – 500 BC
I’ve changed that a bit, as in college, one of my Math professors informed me that Pindar was a poet as well (no doubt).
During a rough time in my life (I ended up in jail for being a stupid kid), the contents of this plaque came back to me. At that point, I adopted it as my personal little motto by which to lead and live my life. Since that time, repeating this to myself over and over, similar to the way some do the Lord’s Prayer (God Grant Me the Serenity …), it has become a part of my core philosophy.
I have this tattooed on my right breast, over my heart. I plan on a bunch more tattoos of a similar nature (sayings & philosophies by which I live my life) before I die. (This, so at least a coroner has something interesting to read if I have to be cut-up for an autopsy.)
That’s who Pindar is to me. So if ever you see that quote laying around the Internet on a website or forum, that’s probably me. I don’t know anyone else who’s running around, using this as their tag-line. Then again, someone could pick-it up along the way (which is the ultimate purpose, no?) and start using it. In fact, I hope someone else does … I think it’s a goddamn good philosophy, and Pindar is a kick-ass guy.
Aside from that, I’ve tentatively decided to use “Pindar” as a new, personal nickname.
